Title: "Dead Christ, Alone"
Size: 5"x5"
Medium: Ballpoint pen drawing
Date: 2003
Comments: I did this the other day in class since I was bored. It is freehand drawing based on the renaissance painting of "Dead Christ" by Mantegna. The proportions are purposely the way they are, even slightly incorrect by foreshortening, because Mantegna wanted to emphasize the upper torso of Jesus. In the original, his mother and Mary Magdalene is seen on the left side of the bed, weeping. I chose to leave them out because I wanted Christ to be completely alone in the tomb, and also to evoke emotion instead of the obvious weeping figures displaying emotion for us.

i recognized his painting right away. great rendition and such careful attention to details .. it's astoundnig. and i can't believe you did it in such a small size!

Hmmm, normally my ballpoint pen drawings when I get bored in class involve stick figures. This looks very carefully done, with good shading, detailed textures (especially in the sheets) and overall shapes of the forms. Makes me want to pack my paint brushes and canvas for next time I get bored during Modern Mexican History *gag* :) (Smile)

Awesome. Ballpoint pen is the ultimate medium. :D (Big Grin) Really nicely done. Good of you to explain where you took it from and to explain the funky proportions. Nicely done.
